Smoke Compositions

Smoke compositions are pyrotechnic compositions designed primarily to generate smoke.

Smoke compositions are used as obscurants or for generation of signaling smokes for various purposes. Some types of smoke compositions are used as a payload of smoke bombs and smoke grenades.

White Phosphorus

White Phosphorus is produced from natural phosphate rocks, and used in a variety of military applications, in munitions (mortars, artillery shells, grenades) and as to create smoke screens.

Due to its high reactivity with oxygen, it is always supplied submerged in water in sealed steel drums, and is loaded into projectiles submerged in water.

IPI supplies White Phosphorus in accordance with the MIL-W-215D specification.

    Hexachloroethane

Hexachloroethane (C2Cl6; a.k.a. PCA, Carbon hexachloride, Ethane hexachloride and Perchloroethane) is a white crystalline solid at room temperature. It is used in smoke compositions, such as base-eject smoke grenades.

Smoke grenades, called hexachloroethane (HCE) smoke or HC smoke, utilize a mixture containing roughly equal parts of HCE and zinc oxide and approximately 6% granular aluminium.

IPI supplies Hexachloroethane in accordance with the MIL-H-235C specification.

      Red Phosphorus (Stabilized)

Red Phosphorus is used in the manufacture of pyrotechnics, semiconductors, fertilizers, pesticides, incendiary shells, smoke bombs, and tracer bullets.

IPI supplies Red Phosphorus in accordance with the MIL-P-670 specification.
